Our vintage moody green study is my new favorite.
Ok friend – I’m here to tell you this all off-white house just about swallowed me up with its plain jane feeling. I had to do something stat to make it ours. To add our mark. To bring out its personality. And I went big and bold with moody green in the study.
I decided to paint the entire study a deep and moody green. The whole thing…walls, ceiling and trim. I busted out my Wagner sprayer and a ladder while my husband sealed me off behind a wall of plastic. I can’t lie, I felt like a boss spraying that entire room. It was fun and empowering. Is that weird?
The Best Moody Green Paint Color!
I went with Urban Garden from the HGTV Home line by Sherwin Williams at Lowe’s. This is sincerely my new favorite paint line (I used it here too). The paint is a “one coat” primer and paint in one. I rarely find this one coat claim to be true, but it really is with this one! (BTW This is not a sponsored post, but it should be because I love this stuff!!) It worked like a charm in my Wagner sprayer. There was a good amount of prep to mask off the floor and window, but after that, it went pretty quick. I used flat finish all over in case you were wondering. I prefer flat finish on all my wall paint. Urban Green lived up to its name by adding a fresh updated shade of green, different from the throwback green and maroon of the 90’s! It’s urban cool with a vintage vibe.
This house has close to zero storage, especially when compared to our last house and I have found myself having to buy new furniture to complete rooms and have a place for important stuff like underwear and books. My initial thought was to have some built-ins added to the study, but finding a good carpenter was a harder task than we imagined. This turned out to be a good thing.
Lack of a woodworking genius lead to an alternate plan. Enter the massive bookcase I scored for a song. Let me tell you how this piece came to be in my house. In case you are new here, we just moved to a small town south of Ft Worth. I immediately searched out the local thrifting and antique spots in town and to my delight found the most awesome little store in our downtown. She has tons of great furniture pieces at amazing prices. As I was buying multiple pieces of furniture that I will show you later we started talking about what else I was looking for. I told her about the study. My new BFF Reagan told me about some giant bookcases she had in her storage unit and that was all she wrote. Any wild guesses on how much I paid for this gem? It pays to ask questions and talk with local dealers, you never know what they have in storage or the sources they can scour to help you find what you are looking for. They are a fantastic resource for your hunting adventures (she is now even hunting down pieces for me!). UPDATE: I added more storage and decor, you can see it here.
Three grown men maneuvered this monstrosity into our study and I promptly painted it the same moody green as the walls, using the same paint. I was going for a built-in look without the typical built-ins! I am adding even more storage and will show you that project later this week! This room is not quite finished, but the new color definitely set the ball rolling! You’ll have to let me know what you think about the vintage moody green study color! Shout out if you have any questions, thanks for walking with me. 🙂
This is great! I love the green on green.
Not a color I would choose. It would depress me, especially in the winter.
Paint toooo dark
Holy Cow! That was a gutsy move! My first reaction to the color was UGH! However the finished product coupled with that gorgeous bookcase is totally beautiful. You clearly have The Vision and The Knack!
LOve it Kim! I think it was a genius idea to paint the cabinet the same color as the wall!
You are amazing! Your vision never is describable, but when it comes to life it is unlike anyone elses I have ever seen!!!! Would have never in a million years thought of this! Looks rich! Love it!
OMG LOVE it!
Very stiking! And so not the “normal gray/greige” we are seeing so much of lately. Question: Why do you use flat finish paint on your walls? Isn’t it harder to clean should the need arise? Thank you!
Kim, this is stunning!! You are a genius for doing the furniture the same color. It reminds me of a room I have pinned out of Architectural Digest – for real! And the bigness of this piece is phenomenal. Great job!!
LOVE all of this!!
Wow. What a room!!!!! Such a different look. I could walk in there with my book and snuggle up for hours! You are quite the visionary
Looks amazing I love it
Love the color on the wall! But I would have left the beautiful wood alone on the furniture piece. Painted the same color, it takes away for the gorgeous detail of the piece and takes away the richness.
I LOVE IT!!! I am SOOOOOOOOOO tired of all the white on white on white homes. I keep asking does ANYONE use color anymore??? That looks fantastic! Can’t wait to see more
This is just amazing on so many levels! I applaud you for going with the green, too! I recently had the opportunity to repaint my rooms and paint some new ones after Hurricane Matthew took its toll. I went with glorious COLOR in every room and I do not regret it. I only regret the years of boring white walls! You are such an inspiration.
Kim I love how your room looks. I am so tired of all the white in most posts. That color looks warm to me.
If you like it that’s all that matters, now that beautiful cabinet needs some light on it hard to see. I do mean light as sun light not color.
Beautiful! And the touch of red really pops. I like that you were willing to make such a bold move as I’m about done with the “all white” approach. With so many colors out there why not use a few.
I absolutely love it! You’re such a genius. Now for the name of that antique store. I just may have to make a trip to your town so I can visit it. I’m getting a little bored with some in Fort Worth and Weatherford.
I painted my dining room a color very close to your moody green…and that’s what I wanted. Darker than the others rooms, contemplative and restful. I love mine and I love yours. Plus…holiday decor is gorgeous in there! From Christmas to Easter, through summer flowers into harvest season and Thanksgiving.
Personally I’m moving away from green. HOWEVER, I love how your room turned out. The color is intense and, imho, calming.
I like the green but the cabinet was gorgeous stained & paired w/ the green. Now it disappears. But maybe that’s what you wanted. Personally I couldn’t ever paint something that beautiful unless it had damage.
WOW!! Love that color. Green’s my favorite color and I love all shades of it, but that one screams study and England. Crazy but I love it.!
I love it! I have always felt that a study/library should be dark and cozy. It just makes cuddling up on a rainy or cold day with a book and pet that much better! It’s so good to see a dark color. I am so tired of seeing gray/griege! It is way over used! This is very unique and different from everybody else. I can’t stand cookie cutter decorating where everybody’s decor looks the same! Great job!
Love, love, love it! Thanks for the link to the store- I have family in Midlothian, sending them to check it out :).
Love it !! The big bookcase is absolutely awesome and I love the color on it, makes it classy. Admire your work.
Not my choice of color, to dark and drab but then I feel the same about the furnishings. To each his own. God made us with different likes and this is what makes life worth living. Keep painting!!
I love it! It will be cozy in the winter and actually cooler in the summer (I love my dark room in summer and this is coming from someone whose favorite color is white). I love the painted cabinet – it would have looked boring just sitting there as it was. Great job – can’t wait to see more!
I agree with some of the other comments. While I do like the moody green color, it is a bit much having everything painted with it. I also agree if it’s something you like, more power to you! Just not something for me. Looking forward to seeing the finished room.
It’s beautiful, and if you are happy with it that’s all that matters anyway. It’s a stunning piece and I can tell it’s going to be well used and even more loved than it was in a storage unit gathering dust.
That is soooo beautiful ????????????!
What a fantastic statement room, Kim! Wow!
thanks Larissa, we are loving the cozy feel
Kim, I love the color, even on the bookcase! It just says “come on in, grab a book and stay awhile”! For me, the bookcase detail actually pops more with the green than the original did. I, too, am tired of the lighter rooms and will be adding more color the next time I paint. Thanks for the inspiration!!
aww thanks, it is a cozy room and I am so thrilled with how it is coming along.
Great vision– ♥ what you’ve done!
Thank you, this room is a fav of mine!
It’s only paint. I love different! Everyone is using grey. Good for you! Go for it!!!
thanks and we love it so that what counts!
Stunning!!!
Thanks Cathy
My guess is $500 for that awesome cabinet. That room is a stunner! Not quite what I would do (but I don’t live there!) however it is perfect for you at this time in your life. I love the cabinet painted the same as the walls.
Thanks Karen – It was less than that – 🙂
Love love love the dark green!!! Gorgeous!!
I’m having a desk refinished and wanted to use the color you used, moody green. The refinisher went to Lowe’s first but said the color was nearly lime green after they mixed it up. She then went to Sherman Williams to pick up color swatches she could try to match to your photo.
Can you please send me the color mix you used?
This is exactly what I used: Urban Garden from the HGTV Home line by Sherwin Williams at Lowe’s I’ve had it mixed at Sherwin Williams stores and it is not quite the same as the formula that is exact at Lowe’s. I do know some machine mix differently than others, but this is all the info I have for you, I don’t have the color mix numbers anymore, so sorry!
