Old silver flatware storage boxes show up at garage sales and flea markets all the time. They can be made over for a ton of different uses…remote control storage, catch-all box, craft supplies, the list could go on.
Today I am flipping one of the flatware boxes into a cozy hot chocolate station! Joining me are a few other friends who love a trash to treasure makeover like I do. We are bringing you some junkin’ inspiration Fall style! I hope you will take a minute to check out their projects.
This sweet silver storage box was spotted at a garage sale for $2. I had been on the look out for one because I adore how my friend Christy makes them over and I wanted to try it. Luckily this one was in good condition and didn’t smell old and musty like some I have come across before.
The baby blue velvet needed a permanent vacation. A little ripping and pulling and out it came. I sanded the inside for a smooth-ish surface. It’s hard to get all the glue and cardboard off that helped hold the insides together!
The entire box got a fresh coat of homemade chalky paint. The brush I used left more ridged streaks than I usually prefer, but I decided to use the texture in my favor for a worn look that mimicked the fabric I was using on the inside.
After taping off a few stripes, I used acrylic craft paint with a little water added for soft stripe.
Next I heavily sanded the whole thing.
To add age and depth I used dark wax to distress the edges and bring some brown into the striped area. When you use dark wax the best tool to soften and blend the wax is super fine steel wool. Hoarding random hardware always pays off and for this project I chose and old wooden knob for a rustic feel. It is glued on with E600 glue.
To line the inside I used a cardboard cutout for the top and bottom. After lining up and wrapping the fabric around the cardboard I secured it in place with fabric glue.
For the bottom piece I cut it out as follows , using fabric glue to “hem” the edges that show on the sides and wrapping the long piece you see into the corner. Fabric glue is quite tacky and holds quickly so it worked well for this application.
You could easily use scrapbook paper or wall paper if you wanted. The inside was pretty rough, so unless you are patient with sanding, only painting the inside is not likely an option.
Next I layered in some of my fall favorites, pumpkin, candy corn, hydrangeas and hot chocolate. A certain little six year old acted as my photography assistant but I know he was really just patiently waiting for the hot chocolate!
Most likely this up-cycled flatware box will move around my house and serve a number of different purposes, but we will enjoy the cozy cups of cocoa for now! Be sure to pin this makeover so you can fix up your own flatware box soon then please head over to visit my friends…links below!

Love how you transformed this piece. I see these flatware boxes at garage sales and know they will end up in the trash. This is a fabulous way to make them new again. #sundaysathome
my friend saw this one at my house and told me she literally threw one out last weekend. It’s like she doesn’t even know me, lol! I told her to never do that again without consulting me first, i love everyone’s cast offs!
Really fantastic! I have the same chest, but it is holding my grandmother’s silver plate sliverware so I don’t dare touch it, but wish i has an alternate one to revamp! thanks for sharing on craft schooling Sunday!
