We added a Murphy bed to my craft room/office and it is the coolest thing ever!
Possibly one of the greatest bonuses to the new house we moved into this summer is the 5th bedroom. I quickly claimed this spot as mine and it’s now my office and craft room as well as the spare bedroom. That’s a lot of jobs for one room, but adding a Murphy bed made it not only super functional but stylish as well.
Building our own Murphy bed just wasn’t on this DIY girl’s heart, that is way more than the hubs and I were willing to attempt, so I looked around online and tried to find something suitable to fit my vision. I had one store that specializes in Murphy beds come out and they did an awesome 3-D plan with tons of ideas but the price tag that came with it was WAY TO HIGH for this budget loving lady. That’s when I got my budget goggles on and figured it out myself!
I found a local man that specializes in Murphy beds, picked one from his website and he had it built and delivered in less than two weeks (versus a six week lead time from the big company) at less than half the cost of the big box company. It is a breeze to open and close, plus I was able to add this cool fold out desk that I use as extra work space, then it tucks away when company comes.
Next I went to IKEA (a favorite of mine) and figured out how to maximize my storage in this room by building around the Murphy bed. I actually had the bed builder leave the bed in raw wood and color matched paint to the IKEA bookshelves and painted the bed myself. I wanted it to match and look seamless, and it does! The builder came back and installed the bed after I painted it (with my Wagner sprayer of course). I went with the Billy Bookcase from IKEA and picked a combo of glass and closed front doors to make the bookshelves cabinets.
The extra awesome thing about this set up is that it is movable! The entire unit can go to another room or house if we need it to versus having a built in unit that stays with the house. Again, budget saver.
I even got this duvet cover (Bjornloka) at IKEA, it’s the perfect neutral addition to the room. I found these great sheets at Walmart and love the combo they make. BONUS – they both were a budget friendly buy. Clearly Oliver agrees they are a cozy find…
While I was at IKEA I found the perfect desk set up for me. I have a combo of drawers and file cabinets (Alex combo) with a gorgeous butcher block top (Gerton). The pieces are movable and interchangeable so if I ever want to reconfigure it will be a cinch.
The desk area looks a lot like my old laundry room/craft room. I like to surround myself with supplies, trinkets and memorabilia that speaks to me. Some may think it is cluttered, but it is perfection to me!
Another item I got for the office from IKEA is a rolling kitchen island (called the Stenstorp). I liked it because it moves easily, is extremely sturdy and provides a good amount of extra storage. I move it around to work on and do many Facebook lives from this surface.
Another space saving thing I did was utilize a small strip of wall space for a TV. I don’t watch much TV , but my parents do when they visit. I made use of a small strip of wall space by using the Trones shoe storage mounted to the wall. The small TV sits on top of the storage box perfectly and the pull out drawer boxes hold the TV remote in one and the kitty litter scoop in another (because no one wants to look at that thing!)
Now I am really being open with you guys – here is what the inside of the craft closet looks like!!! Yikes – and it is pretty organized! I added tons of shelving for optimal storage. I got this storage at Walmart because the dimensions they had available worked out better for my space.
Well friend – that is my space and I am loving it! I am so grateful to have a room to sprawl out in and to house friends and family. Hope you got some good ideas to make the most of your space as well!

You have completely inspired me! I now have an extra room that I want to completely dedicate to my “do” room as I like to call it. All things “projects”. I’ve always wanted to have a space where I can choose to use that like green chair or make curtains out of Pom Pom trim and torn fabrics, a really crazy rug on the floor. I can hardly wait to pull it all together this year hopefully. Thank you!

Hey! Have you been looking at my Pinterest account again? This is just what I would like for MY extra bedroom! I think the Murphy bed is a great idea. I have a queen bed in that room and it takes up so much space. Thisset up would allow me to have a guest room as well as a office. Now to find a Murphy bed maker.

I seriously love it! You can buy diy ones and there are large companies thT make them. Just depends on how much you want to spend and your skill level! Best of luck finding the right fit for you❤

Can to provide some additional information on the murphy bed “pull out” extra desk?
Kim at Salvaged Living says
It is like a desk flap that pulls up and has two braces underneath to hold it in place when the bed is closed. Super convenient for a small or dual purpose space.

Oh, I love IKEA for the same reason as you – you can make storage to work in any corner, or area you have. I bought some of the little storage units a while back, and my husband put them up on a low platform with wheels. Then we set them on it on three sides, some with drawers, some with doors, some just left open for baskets, etc. The top is a huge solid surface which I can do large projects on, or spread out for other projects. I have it in my craft room/office/storage room and I can store so much, and have a great work surface. The units I used were called EKET, and they had options to add a door, shelf, drawers, or just use bins. What a wonderful product – you can do so much with it! When we downsize, I’m looking for the Murphy bed too!

Yes to all of this so many options and that is a great thing!
