Update your Old Gold Picture Frames with This Fresh DIY Idea
Lawdy friends – it’s been a crazy hot mess around here and I needed a break, which is where this gold picture frame comes in. Getting my hands dirty in a creative way always soothes my soul, am I alone? I have been purging a ton in anticipation of our pending move and my mom has been cleaning out her house as well.
She saved a stack of old picture frames for me and this old gold picture frame caught my eye. See how it is deep between the glass and where the picture goes? Well, I had a fun idea for it, maybe you have an outdated frame that could use some love too?

I am all about gold as an accent (wait till you see the new house accents), but these old picture frames just aren’t in style anymore. However, they are easy to bring up to date. Painting picture frames with chalk paint is one of the quickest and easiest updates you can do.
Take your frame apart and paint all the pieces that need a facelift with your favorite chalk paint, supply list below (or even mix your own). The inside piece to this picture frame is plastic and you’ll be happy to know chalk paint works equally as well on the metal frame as it does the plastic.
You will need two or three coats for full coverage, but it dries quickly so this won’t take long.
For the cute picture design I used my Enjoy The Journey transfer from Chalk Couture with Chalk Couture PASTE. You can see how to use Chalk Couture here. This transfer in particular is fun to mix and match with color and design, you can put flowers wherever you want, I even added a few big flowers from another transfer.
This particular phrase felt God given. This house sale and hunting expedition has been no joke. Getting our house ready to sell and trying to find a new home in a town I’m completely unfamiliar with has been quite the adventure. Many stops along the way I’ve felt like unraveling and getting frustrated, but God is reminding me to ENJOY THE RIDE. The destination isn’t always the best part, trusting in the journey is where faith really has the opportunity to shine. I have to stop and refocus, remembering that God is for us, already gone ahead of us and he is in the details.
For me, taking time to craft and be alone is my chance to be alone with the Lord. It’s time for me to shift my eyes back to him and let the hustle and bustle fall away. Friend, if you feel guilt indulging in your hobby or craft STOP!
Guilt is not from God, use that time to connect with him and let him refresh you with the gift he gave you. The devil will tell you to use your time differently, he will distract you and heap doubt upon your head, but recognize his lies and return to the truth.
You were created to create, so get to it! Pardon the side bar and now back to our picture frame change up!
After I got the new picture all chalked up, I used a little surprise from the dollar store. This little piece of faux grass is honestly pretty rough. I’m not sure what you would do with it besides something fun and offbeat like this project, but it works for this purpose.
The faux grass got a haircut and I used the grass clippings to fill the bottom of the picture frame. I love the dimension and texture it gives. Plain white craft paper serves as the background.
Since Chalk Couture PASTE is not permanent I can easily change this frame out for holidays, wouldn’t it be cute with tinsel for Christmas, acorns or something for fall…endless possibilities!
If you want to freshen up your decor updating old picture frames is a great place to start, and it’s fun too! Hope you carve out some time to get your hands dirty and your heart clean friend!

Congrats on your new house, new city. Send photos when you start your redesign! I am glad you put your side bar in, because sometimes I do feel guilty when I paint, but you are right, God wants us to rest our minds and just sit with him! I love this project, Thrift Store here I come…

Yes, looking forward to hearing more about the house. How did you know I had a guilt trip on about sewing recently? I love today’s pattern and will certainly try to do this with one of my orphan frames!

This is so fun! A friend once told me she prays while she knits gifts for people. I thought it was such a great idea, that I often use the time I’m creating to pray, too 🙂
Kim at Hunt and Host says
I think anytime we use our hands it’s the perfect time to pray, even pray over the people you are crating for, so special!
